Conscious relaxation

When life gets too busy it’s easy for stress to creep up on us. We need to be aware of our bodies and recognize the situation. We must make a conscious choice to calm the mind and relax the body.

4 easy relaxation techniques

Breathe

Be intentional when you take a deep breath. When I do that, I feel a lifting of my core that gently shifts my shoulders back. This posture gives space for my lungs to fill. Taking slower breaths helps release tension. Breathe in for a count of 3, exhale for a count of 8. Feel the tension leave your body.

Create a ritual

Make a relaxing activity a ritual. For me, it’s having a cup of tea. I have had this ritual long enough, that the first sip sends a signal to my brain that says “ahhh.” I have had that same response so many times, that my brain now expects it. Other rituals could be taking a bath, walking on the beach or going for a run. It really is whatever practice puts you in that “ahhh”place.

Meditate

Meditation is effective to calm the mind and relax the body. Unfortunately, my body has a hard time sitting still for 20-30 minutes. Because of that, I have made my own style of meditation. I start by writing in my journal. This helps me clear my head. I then progress to 10 minutes of conscious breathing, using a mantra and listening to meditation music. My current favorite is: “Reiki Hands of Light” by C.G. Deuter. Any form of meditation is better than nothing, so the key is to find what works for you.

Be present

How many times do we get on automatic pilot, only to realize we took a hike or walked to the car and didn’t even notice where we were? There are so many things to savor and enjoy if we would pause long enough to notice. Noticing means allowing yourself the space to just “be” in your environment. If you pay attention you will find beauty in color, sounds and textures. The key is to stop, take a deep breath and look around. Enjoy where you are now.

Whatever resonates with you, I invite you to make a conscious decision to slow down and relax.
