Fruit is not bad sugar

Fruit isn’t bad sugar

As I searched for answers to relieve pain and recover my health, doctors or practitioners put me on a variety of diets and supplements. Each time the protocol was different. Every time I had to learn what are the “good” healthy choices now and what do I avoid. I did this many times over the course of 20 years. I began each new protocol filled with the hope that this was my answer to less pain and more energy.

The low-carb diet

In 2009, a new doctor put me on a low-carb diet. It was a modified version of the Rosedale Diet, and among other things, it restricted the amount of fruit I could eat. It only allowed me a 1/2 cup of certain fruits per day, and had a list of fruits to avoid. I jumped in and vigilantly followed the guidelines. When we went to Hawaii, I would say “no, thank you,” to offers of mango and pineapple, because they were “sugar”.

Fruit lumped in with “sugar”

This went on for 7 years. Then one of my practitioners recommended the book Medical Medium. One of the things I learned was the healing power of fruit, and how it shouldn’t be grouped with all the other “sugars” out there.

“Do not get a pound of fruit confused with a pound of sugar. A pound of sugar is a pound of sugar. A pound of fruit is a unique blend of life-creating, life-saving, life-sustaining phytonutrients and other phytochemicals that stop disease and promote long life. Fruit does not have that much sugar in it. Fruits are made up of living water, minerals, vitamins, protein, fat, other nutrients, pulp, fiber, antioxidants, pectin—and just a fraction of sugar.”

Enjoyment and more energy

After discovering this information about fruit, I went to the organic market and bought fruit that I hadn’t eaten in years. I felt like I had hit the jackpot! I was so used to avoiding all “sugar,” that adding fruit back into my life felt like this amazing gift. Now that I’m eating fruit again, I have noticed my energy increase. I feel that fruit isn’t just supporting my body, it is also soothing my spirit. That’s probably because I am no longer denying myself something my body craves and was missing. I am enjoying every bite!
