Stay healthy all year

Have you ever said, “I don’t have time to be sick”?

When we are busy and pulled in different directions, our immune systems can be seriously taxed. Yet at the exact time, we most need to take care of ourselves, we push our limits, cut corners and eat poorly. This means we are more susceptible to illness, and it usually happens when we can least afford downtime and need to stay healthy.

Do you listen to your body?

It took me years to learn the signs of a taxed immune system and to discover that there was a pattern. I now realize that my body was communicating with me. These signs are a gift of sorts because when I recognize them and take action, I head that cold or flu off at the pass. That means I stay healthy!

My signs

  • Cold – I’m unusually cold and I can’t get warm
  • Tired – I know I’m overextending, but keep pushing through
  • Stressed/overwhelmed – I just can’t seem to get it all done

These are the signs that I pay attention to. What is your body telling you?

Actions to support your immune system

  • Take extra care to avoid these foods:
    • sugar (especially be aware of hidden sugar – yes, that means saying “no” to that mocha)
    • simple carbs, such as bread and pasta (which convert to sugar)
    • alcohol (yes, even avoid wine with dinner)
  • Stay warm. I always carry extra layers. But when I’m in that “unusually cold state,” I really load up on layers and turn up the heat. Whatever it takes to get warm.
  • Get plenty of rest, and find time for naps
  • Practice good hand washing
  • Say “no” to extra activities that aren’t necessary
  • Take immune boosters:
    • Black Elderberry (capsules)
    • Comprehensive Immune Support (Host Defense Mushrooms)
    • Vitamin C
    • Vitamin D
  • Keep a positive mindset and focus on health

Even once the signs are gone, I continue these steps for a few more days. During this time, I’m careful to not overdo, and I pay extra attention to my body.

When you recognize your signs and let this awareness in, you can choose to take action to stay healthy.
